What to see in Košice? Add these 20 places to your list

Košice has a unique atmosphere and is perfect for a weekend trip with family or a partner. The second-largest city in Slovakia offers plenty of opportunities for culture, relaxation in nature, and exploring historical landmarks. Which places should you not miss?

Historical gothic monuments

It’s impossible not to start with the most iconic landmark of Košice – St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral. It is not only the largest cathedral in Slovakia but also one of the most important architectural works in Central Europe. Inside, you will be amazed by the beautiful stained glass windows, monumental stone pillars, and detailed frescoes.

Another historical gem is the Dominican Church from the 13th century, the oldest preserved building in the city. With a height of 68 meters, it also has the tallest tower in Košice. However, this is just a fraction of the many historical monuments in Košice, which together form the largest urban conservation area in Slovakia. In the center, also visit the Crafts Lane, where you will discover charming artisan houses.

Places for relaxation in nature

Nature and hiking enthusiasts should not miss the Bankov area. Here you will find historic villas, chapels, a spring, a mini-golf area, and garden cottages. A beautiful walk also promises the Botanical Garden in Košice, which, with an area of 30 hectares, is the largest botanical garden in Slovakia. In the summer, you can refresh yourself at the water reservoir in the Nad jazerom district, at the Ryba swimming pool, or at the Bukovec Reservoir, 7 km away.

When you long for views

There is nothing better than a panoramic view of the city from above. The most beautiful one is offered by the Hradová Observation Tower. You can reach it on foot in about 20 minutes from the parking lot on the Košice – Kavečany state road. Nearby are the ruins of the lesser-known Košice Castle.

Fun for kids

You can take children to the Košice ZOO with Dinopark, which is home to 240 species of animals, but a visit to the Košice Children’s Railway in the Čermeľ Valley will also be a pleasant experience for them. Older children can be taken to the Laser Arena, and the little ones will have great fun at the Anička Children’s Area in a very nice park by the Hornád River in Košice.

Where to go for culture in Košice?

Culture lovers should not miss the Košice State Philharmonic and, of course, the National Theatre Košice with its drama, opera, and ballet ensemble. Many interesting, often alternative events are offered by Tabačka Kulturfabrik, Kasárne/Kulturpark, Steelpark creative factory, and other cultural spots. Children will enjoy the Puppet Theatre in Košice.

Enjoy Košice to the fullest

Košice is a city that has something to offer every visitor. Whether you are interested in history, nature, culture, or just looking for a place to relax, this city will certainly not disappoint you.
